to start anti-poll campaign : Urges People To
Boycott Parliament Election Srinagar, Feb 9: The
chairman of Hurriyat Conference (G), Syed Ali Shah
Geelani, Monday urged people to boycott the
parliamentary elections which are likely to be held in
April-May.
Geelani, who is presently undergoing treatment in New
Delhi, said he will personally spearhead the
anti-election campaign. “Kashmiris should boycott the
parliamentary elections at any cost. There is no
ambiguity in my statement and I expect people to stay
away from the polls to respect sacrifices of martyrs,”
Geelani told Greater Kashmir.
Geelani said the recent verdict of the Assembly
elections was purely for basic amenities. “But New Delhi
and its stooges in Kashmir are projecting it as
referendum just to befool the international community of
the real dispute. We will soon start the anti-election
campaign to aware the people about evil designs of New
Delhi,” he said.
Geelani acknowledged that the pro-freedom leaders could
not carry out the anti-poll campaign during the Assembly
elections. “Authorities resorted to undemocratic means
to crush our anti-poll campaign. The pro-freedom
leadership and activists were kept behind bars and even
booked under draconian acts like PSA. Some of them are
still languishing in jails. We’ve to understand that the
Assembly elections were held in presence of over 10 lakh
troops and in atmosphere of fear and complete
lawlessness,” he said.
Geelani said this time the pro-freedom camp is geared up
against the elections. “We will try to reach nook and
corner of the Valley to launch our anti-poll campaign.
If health permits, I will try to participate in the
campaign. We’ve formulated such mechanism that even if
the pro-freedom leadership is put under arrest, still
the campaign will go on.”
The veteran leader said elections are held just to
strengthen New Delhi’s cause in the state. “Elections
have produced many self-styled leaders who didn’t dare
to represent the sentiments of Kashmiris in New Delhi.
Instead they have been supporting every move designed to
suppress aspirations of Kashmiris,” he said.
Geelani maintained that autonomy and self-rule can’t be
substitute to the right of self-determination.
“We will not accept any solution under the Constitution
of India. Kashmiris should not lose heart and learn
lessons from the June uprising. We have to learn from
our past mistakes and not take any phase of the struggle
for-granted. We can’t afford to sit silently till we
achieve our goal,” Geelani said. |

US film maker denied entry into Kashmir
: Srinagar: The Indian
government has asked an American
filmmaker, Udi Aloni’s not to visit
Kashmir again. The dictum comes after
Aloni showed a documentary about the
non-violent resistance movement in
Kashmir. The film was shown at the
Berlin Film Festival.
“Indian authorities have taken umbrage
at Kashmir: Journey to Freedom and are
denying visa to me,” Aloni, said after
the film was premiered in Panorama
section, which showcases independent and
arthouse cinema.
“Please let me return to India. I really
miss my friends from Kashmir, and I
really love to be in India,” he said
while defending his documentary and
insisting he had done India a good
service by making it.
Aloni said he had gone to Kashmir
without really knowing what he was going
to see, and that his film was less a
documentary and more of an action movie
of a different sort.
“I have always believed in
non-violence,” he added.
Aloni’s movie shows how a new generation
of young Kashmiri Muslims, after years
of armed resistance, decided to lay down
the arms and start a nonviolent
resistance movement – with the hope of
finally achieving peace and
independence. |

We are no threat to US, Britain: LeT :
SRINAGAR:: The Lashkar-e-Toiba on Monday
termed the allegations levelled by the
Central Investigation Agency about the
outfit being a threat to America and
Britain as baseless.
In a tele-statement, a caller
identifying himself as the LeT
spokesperson, Dr Abdullah Gaznavi, said,
“The allegations levelled against us are
baseless and misleading. Such statements
are the result of India’s vicious
propaganda. United States and Britain
should not fall in India’s trap.”
“LeT does not have any network in USA or
Britain. And we don’t have any plans of
carrying out militant attacks in either
country,” he said, adding, “We have
already made it clear that LeT had got
nothing to do with Mumbai attacks.”

We were arrested for uniting
Hurriyat: Nayeem Khan :
Srinagar, Feb 9: The chairman of
National Front, Nayeem Ahmad Khan, on
Monday said he and other senior
pro-freedom leader, Shabir Ahmad Shah
were being prosecuted for “uniting
Hurriyat.”
Talking to reporters after appearing in
the court here, Khan accused New Delhi
of propagating politics of hate. “Our
aspirations can’t be suppressed by any
force and we will continue to fight for
the freedom of Kashmir,” he said. “Some
bureaucrats and police officers are
trying to suppress the peoples’
movement. They cannot force people to
submission by arresting and booking them
under the false cases.”
Earlier Khan was presented before the
3rd additional district and sessions
Judge in a criminal case here.
The NF chairman was arrested four months
ago during land transfer row from north
Kashmir and it was his first hearing
since then.
Khan’s case was pleaded by the battery
of lawyers, including Nazir Ahmad Ronga,
Muhammad Abdullah Pandit, Ghulam Nabi
Shaheen and advocate Muhammad Rafique
Jo. They informed the court that the
health condition of the Khan was
deteriorating and pleaded that he be
shifted to the Central Jail Srinagar.
However the state counsel opposed it.
The case was adjourned and the Judge
directed the government to produce Khan
before the court on February 10.
