Hurriyat (G) announces protest programme /
Varmul Chalo On Friday, Strike
On Saturday:
Srinagar, June 14: Hurriyat Conference (G) on
Sunday announced the protest programme for the coming
week. The conglomerate has urged people to march towards
Varmul in north Kashmir on June 19 (Friday) and observe
a complete shutdown on June 20 (Saturday).
“Strike has been called to make India's vice president
Hamid Ansari aware about the ground situation. People
should remain indoors and traffic should remain off the
roads,” a Hurriyat spokesman said in a statement.
He said the meeting of the executive body of the
conglomerate presided over by its acting chairman,
Ghulam Nabi Sumji, was held here this afternoon and it
was decided that protests would continue. “People will
march towards Varmul on Friday and gather at Masjid
Baitul Mukaram where peaceful protests would be held
after the congregation prayers,” he added.
The spokesman called on the various trade unions and
federations of the Valley to protest peacefully on
Monday afternoon.
“Like the students, traders will stage protest
demonstrations across the Valley at 2 PM,” he said,
adding that transporters, women and separatist
organizations would protest on Tuesday, Wednesday and
Thursday respectively.
“All transporters including the members of minibus and
auto driver associations will take to streets at 2PM and
protest peacefully. This will be followed by women
staging protests on Wednesday. Zamrooda Habib and
Fareeda Behanji will lead the demonstration of women in
Lal Chowk,” he added.
“Peaceful demonstrations will be held across the Valley
on Thursday to express solidarity with the detained
pro-freedom leaders and thousands of Kashmiris lodged in
various jails,” he said.
“We will continue to protest till Kashmir issue is
resolved. We appeal the people to make protest program a
success,” he added.
He said that next meeting of the Hurriyat would be held
on June 21 (Sunday) to decide the future course of
action.

Shopian body threatens indefinite strike
/ CRPF Cop Wounded In Clash :
Shopian:
June 14: Even as the normal life in this
south Kashmir town remained crippled for
the 16th consecutive day, the committee
formed by the people in the wake of the
rape and murder of a teenager and her
sister-in-law last month, have announced
an indefinite shutdown till the culprits
responsible for the heinous crime were
arrested and punished. A CRPF constable
was injured in a stone pelting incident
in the town today.
The committee named as
Majlis-i-Mushawarat, Shopian,
representing various sections of the
society took the decision to continue
the agitation after day-long
deliberations at the Jamia Masjid today.
Over 100 people from different walks of
life had assembled in the Masjid to
decide the future course of action. A
retired government official, Abdul
Rashid Dalal, is its president while the
body comprising traders, fruit growers,
lawyers, religious scholars and other
sections of the society, will have five
more office bearers, said its
vice-president and spokesman, Muhammad
Shafi Khan.
Talking to Greater Kashmir, Khan said
the committee had unanimously decided to
continue the shutdown till the rapists
and killers were exposed, nabbed and
punished. “The culprits are none but
those in uniform,” Khan said, adding the
committee would be absolutely
non-political.
However, Khan said, the committee had
put forth a demand for closure of the
security camps in inhabited areas of the
town and adjoining villages. Replying to
a question regarding side effects of the
shutdown, he said people of the district
were ready to sacrifice anything for an
end to atrocities of police and armed
forces and for safeguarding the chastity
of their women. The committee would
compensate the dailywagers especially
the poor footpath vendors in case the
strike prolonged.
Terming the judicial commission
irrelevant, Khan said it did not possess
powers to yield the desired results.
Meanwhile, demonstrations continued at
Bonbazar and Batapora of the town during
which two vehicles of police and CRPF
were stoned by angry youth. Police fired
in air to disperse the protesters. At
Batapora, constable, Subhash Chander of
17 BN CRPF, was seriously injured in the
stone pelting, hospital sources said. A
police constable moving in uniform was
also thrashed by youth this evening.

Yatra starts from Baltal route today :
SASB Reviews Arrangements, Army Clearing
Blocked Track : Baltal, Jun 14:
The chief executive officer of Shri
Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB) along
with senior Army officers on Sunday
visited the cave to take stock of the
snow clearance work, even as Army
stepped in to clear the route from
Sangam to the cave.
The CEO, B B Vyas directed the officials
to double the work-force to make the
track fully functional by tomorrow when
the yatra will commence from Baltal
route.
The Shrine Board officers also discussed
the relocation of the helipads from the
Holy Cave and inspected the proposed
site at Panjtarni. The work on making
the sites functional has already begun.
In a chopper the CEO flew over the snow
covered track from Sheshnag to Panjtarni,
parts of which are yet to be fully
cleared due to fresh snowfall last week.
At the cave most of the Langers have
been set up while the tent-shop owners
are putting up tents for running their
establishments of essential commodities
and offerings. The Shrine Board has
erected 15 huts and 85 toilets while the
clearance on the entry and exit points
near the cave is in the final stages.
The various service providing
departments like Public Health, Power
Development, Revenue, and Medical have
positioned their staff in the cave,
which will be receiving the first batch
of pilgrims on 16 June from the Baltal
side. The governor N N Vohra, who is the
Chairman of the Board, is likely to lead
the devotees in the Pratham Puja at the
sanctum sanctorum.
Mr Vyas also visited the Baltal Base
Camp and reviewed the arrangements with
the senior officers. He gave
instructions for setting up of a Check
Post at Domel to record the details of
the incoming pilgrims, which is
imperative for regulating the pilgrimage
smoothly. The Yatris would be permitted
to proceed beyond this point only up to
9 a.m everyday. He emphasized the need
for allowing only such of the pilgrims
whose registration is complete in all
respects like date and the route.
Similar Check Post is being established
ahead of Chandanwari on the traditional
Pahalgam route, which will, however,
become functional after the decision on
throwing this route open for the
pilgrims is taken around 22nd June.
The Chief Executive Officer was given
the first hand information about the
status of the track from Chandanwari to
the cave which is being manned by the
Pahalgam Development Authority. |
